In the ongoing Bihar assembly elections, a significant 43% of candidates in the second phase are classified as crorepatis, a notable rise from 40% in the first phase. This increase highlights a growing trend in Indian politics, where candidates with substantial wealth are becoming more prevalent. According to the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR), out of the 1,302 candidates contesting across 122 constituencies, 16 candidates have declared assets exceeding ₹50 crore. The final turnout and the implications of these wealthy candidates will be closely monitored as votes are cast on November 11, 2025.

The elections have attracted 37 million voters, with polling taking place at 45,399 stations—most in rural areas, aiming to ensure a high turnout similar to the historic 65.08% recorded in the first phase. However, political tensions have emerged, particularly with Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav criticizing the Election Commission (EC) for not releasing gender-wise voter data post the first phase. The EC has responded, stating that such data is typically provided after the final turnout is calculated, amidst claims of a potential bias in security personnel deployment favoring the ruling party.

The surge in crorepati candidates reflects broader trends in Indian elections, where wealth has increasingly become a determinant of political success. Since 2005, the proportion of candidates with assets over ₹1 crore has increased nearly twentyfold, though adjusted for inflation, the current figures indicate that ₹1 crore in 2025 holds the same value as approximately ₹55.4 lakh in 2005. This wealth concentration among candidates raises questions about political representation and the implications for electoral integrity in Bihar and beyond. As voters head to the polls, the outcomes will significantly influence the future political landscape in the state.
